Welcome to my tiny room in cyberspace. Come on in. I have to tell you, I never thought I would have a blog. Who cares what I think except those I talk to about what I think — and even some of them probably don’t care. I love to write, and I almost always have something to vent about, so why not? Sometimes when a particular aspect of the news, pop culture or life bothers me, I think: I can’t be the only person thinking this way, or who is affected this way, or the only one who wants to do more than just *feel* like this.
This summer has been very frustrating. I was hit by a car backing out of a driveway at the end of June, and so I haven’t had the vacation I envisioned, and I’ve gained weight because I couldn’t walk and use my treadmill, so that has really gotten me down. However, I did use my time constructively. I am in the process of publishing a book through iuniverse.com. It is a response, via the vehicle of a short novel, to Jose’ Saramago’s disgusting Nobel-Prize-winning story about a plague of blindness. Fernando Meirelles’ movie adaptation is being released next month, and many blind people are *not* happy. I am rather tired of blindness and blind people being misused by authors, poets, performers, and artists of all stripes to perpetuate false metaphors and make statements about human nature, government and society. I, my children and many other visually impaired people must live with the consequences of these incessantly reinforced stereotypes, false notions and fears. It has a tremendous impact on how we are treated socially, when seeking employment and when simply going about our business in the community. Well, off the soapbox for now. I still have a lot to learn about maintaining a good, readable, user-friendly blog. Thanks for stopping by.
